We may almost be in 2018 but we are still seeing the effects of some of the major events of 2016. It was a year like no other and there were many newsworthy events that took place throughout the year. Five of the most notable news stories of the year are discussed below.
Death Of David Bowie
The year got off to a sad start with the death of David Bowie in January. The singer passed away after a short battle with cancer. Unfortunately his death was only the first in a long line of famous people that died in 2016. It seemed to many people that more well known people died in this year than in any other year in living memory.
The result of the referendum in the UK to leave the European Union was one that was met with great shock. 52% of those who voted chose to leave and it was a very close call. Almost immediately after the result had been announced protests began about the result and Prime Minister David Cameron who had supported the remain campaign resigned. The process of leaving the European Union has now begun but negotiations have been difficult.
Another shock in the world of politics came when Donald Trump was elected as the President of the United States ahead of Hilary Clinton. The millionaire had no previous experience in any kind of political role and is well known for his outspoken views. During his time as president he has been involved in a number of controversies such as his travel ban and links between Russia and senior members of his team.
Worldwide Terror Attacks
There were a number of terror attacks that took place over the year in many different countries around the world. Hundreds of people lost their lives in these attacks and barely a month went by without another attack taking place. Notable attacks include the bombings in Brussels on a subway train and at the airport. Lorries were also used to run people down in attacks that took place in France and Germany.
Queen Elizabeth Turns 90
Queen Elizabeth turned 90 in 2016 and there were a number of celebrations that were held all over the UK to commemorate this occasion. She is the oldest serving monarch and also the one with the longest reign. Despite turning 90 she still makes regular public appearances and travels all over the world.
